With 60,000 major tech jobs having been cut in 2024 alone and differing estimates of how long it takes (on average) for someone to find a new job — about 8 months or 220 job applications according to pathrise — it’s no wonder that the job search is beginning to feel like a war of attrition — what will happen first, finding a new job in UX or starvation?

My story is typical for those who have gotten into the UX field recently. After graduating from my Master’s degree at the tail-end of the Covid Era in 2022, I found a job as a UX Designer at a small agency here in the Bay Area.
The agency had experienced a downturn during Covid and was seeing a re-surence of clientele that necessitated hiring some fresh blood.
However, in May of 2024, I was laid off — leading me here, about 5 months into the search for a new job.
