Some Brainstorming Templates

1. Affinity diagram

An affinity diagram is a method used to organize many ideas into groups with common themes or relationships. Affinity diagrams are tools for analyzing large amounts of data and discovering relationships that allow a design direction to be established based on the associations.

2. Business modal canvas

Business Model Canvas is a strategic management and lean startup template for developing new business models. This approach was developed by Alexander Osterwalder (2012). Describe, design, and pivot your existing business model or developing new ones. Useful for hands-on tools for strategy and innovation.

3. Card sorting

Designers and researchers use card sorting as a tool used to determine the way information is grouped, labeled, and organized within a site or app by allowing users to sort topics into categories that make sense to them.

4. Customer journey map

Journey mapping starts by compiling a series of user goals and actions into a timeline skeleton. Next, the skeleton is fleshed out with user thoughts and emotions in order to create a narrative. Finally, that narrative is condensed into a visualization used to communicate insights that will inform design processes.

5. Design Thinking Canvas

This is a structured approach to successful design-led strategy and innovation. This approach can be used for a wide variety of projects and walks you through the steps of the design thinking from People to Impact.

6. Empathy Map

An empathy map is a collaborative visualization used to articulate what we know about a particular type of user. It externalizes knowledge about users in order to create a shared understanding of user needs, and aid in decision making.

7. Hopes and Fears

The hopes and fears activity is an effective way to gauge participants’ attitudes about a project, workshop, or any other collaborative engagement. “Hopes” reveal your teams’ expectations about what can be accomplished. “Fears” reveal their doubts about making an investment to work together.

8. Persona and Use Cases

Personas are fictional characters, which you create based upon your research in order to represent the different user types. Use cases help you to think about who will be using the design and focuses on features that will engage and give users value.

9. Stakeholder Map

Stakeholder Mapping is a process of collectively identifying the key stakeholders relating to a project. The three-step process involves identifying all individuals who have an interest in the project outcome, grouping them, finding connections, and deciding what matters for each. Stakeholder Mapping helps you ensure you have the right representation of voices.

10. SWOT Analysis

A SWOT Analysis is a method to evaluate strengths (S), weaknesses (W), opportunities (O), and threats (T). A process first developed at Harvard Business School in the 1950s, it can also be used by designers, PMs, and engineers to evaluate products, services, and strategies. Those four factors evaluate both internal and external factors related to a specific project,
service, or strategy. Also, a great exercise is to run a SWOT Analysis of your competition.
