Heuristic Evaluation of Medium
Since you’re reading this on Medium, I don’t need need to explain what this website is. Medium has been going through a redesign phase for quite some time now. As a regular user of Medium, I have seen the user interface changes on this website throughout the past couple of years. In Nov 2022, I conducted a heuristic evaluation of Medium using Jakob Neilsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design. I found some positive and negative points and proposed solutions for those negative ones. This article outlines all of this.
Note: This is not an exhaustive evaluation. I focused only on the major screens that are related to content consumption and exploration.
#1 Visibility of system status
#2 Match between system and the real world
#3 User control and freedom
#4 Consistency and standards
#5 Error prevention
#6 Recognition rather than recall
#7 Flexibility and efficiency of use
#8 Aesthetic and minimalist design
#9 Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
#10 Help and documentation
In a nutshell, Medium is a well designed website and it fairs well against most heuristics. However, there is always some scope for improvement and specific points are highlighted by this heuristic evaluation.
