Figma’s Config 2023 is already mid-way, and the conference recordings are slowly going to Figma’s YouTube channel. Before we get busy consuming all the in-depth content that Config 2023 offers, I wanted to write this short piece highlighting all the considerations we, as designers and summaries, can make while making those Sketch notes from our favorite speakers. I have been summarizing books for a while now, and I can easily see why so many people are obsessed with summaries of these tool commands, conferences, video lectures, and books.

Summarizing a Config talk

Summarizing a conference talk effectively involves capturing the key points and main ideas while maintaining the overall coherence and relevance of the presentation. Here’s a step-by-step approach to help you summarize a conference talk:

  1. Take notes: During the talk, make sure to take detailed notes. Focus on capturing the main ideas, critical arguments, supporting evidence, and any relevant examples or case studies mentioned by the speaker.
  2. Identify the main theme: Determine the central theme or topic of the conference talk. This could be a specific research finding, a novel approach, a call to action, or an exploration of a particular problem or concept.
  3. Note the structure: Pay attention to the talk’s structure, including the introduction, main body, and conclusion. Identify any key sections or subtopics that contribute to the overall flow of the presentation.
  4. Highlight key points: Review your notes and identify the most significant points made by the speaker. Look for statements or ideas that are repeatedly emphasized, as these are often crucial to understanding the talk’s core message.
