*Well not dead — just very, very different from what it is now.

Design’ has become a big word in the current world of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design.

We’re now in a different era of design where wireframes merge with coded prototypes, and ‘design’ covers a vast spectrum of tasks and disciplines –yet we still seem to be stuck in the old world of print design where work was waterfall, and each stage of a job each had its specialism.

I find design agencies, especially, fall into this old world mentality and it’s often carried over into in-house design teams too. Too often, the design is handed-off to developers and treated differently with little consideration or concern of the inner workings of either discipline.

How design jobs are traditionally split, from agency mentality.

So, why is this a problem? Separation and hand-off are bad — really bad! What happens is that the research passes notes onto the UX team. The UX team passes wireframes off to the UI team…
