Mastering Mobile UX: Frank Spillers’ 8 Essential Design Goals

I recently completed a course on the Interaction Design Foundation website, focusing on mobile user experience design. The course was instructed by Frank Spillers, a seasoned UX designer and director of the award-winning UX consulting firm, Experience Dynamics. Among the various topics covered in the course was a short chapter titled ‘The 8 Goals of Mobile UX.’ This was a topic I hadn’t encountered before, and while the goals are relatively basic to understand, they hold significant value. That’s why I’m writing this article to share the 8 goals of mobile UX with you.
The 8 Design Goals
1- Make it easy
One of the most crucial goals of UX design is to simplify the user experience and include only what is necessary for users to complete their tasks. This objective becomes even more critical for mobile devices due to limited screen real estate. Frank Spillers explains that to achieve simplicity in the experience, one must reduce ‘Interface friction,’ which refers to any point in the user’s journey where the rhythm or flow is disrupted. A notable example of this is when signing in is required every time a website is accessed. While this enhances security, it slows down the user’s experience.
