The following is a basic outline for presenting your UX/UI design work to colleagues, stakeholders and other decision-makers. It’s aimed at junior- to-midweight UX & UI designers. If this is not you, as always, please move along.

One of the skills I find myself teaching every Junior or Midweight designer is how to present work successfully to stakeholders.

This is because there is a difference between the mindset of working through a design problem — and the mindset of presenting something to others.

Just because you have done one, does not mean you will be good at the other.

However the good news is that a little forward planning, a simple framework and a bit of practice can you become awesome at stakeholder presentations.

Step 1: Forward planning

When designing, you are (hopefully) thinking about the end user. Talking through your work with others is no different — but this time, the users are your stakeholders or decision-makers and the experience is.. you.

So, in true UX style; before your next presentation or WIP, have a think about the following:

  • Who is your audience?
  • What was the brief they gave you OR what relation does this work have to previous work?
  • What do they think you have been doing since the briefing?
  • What do they need from you today?
  • What do you need from them?
  • How are they likely to respond?
  • What assumptions might they have?
  • What objections might you have to over come?
  • How will you inspire confidence in your solution?
  • How will you move them to the next step of the project?
