“I see all this potential, and I see it squandered. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables — slaves with white collars.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war… Our great depression is our lives.

We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won’t. We’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.” (emphasis mine)

-Tyler Durden, Fight Club

Many of us are pissed at ourselves for being average Joes or being a mere speck of stardust in this inexplicable cosmic evolution.

Many of us spend hours daydreaming about being pop stars, movie celebrities, novelistas, legendary technologists, awe-inspiring designers, entrepreneurs of next big unicorn.

Or someone who is going to put a dent in the fucking universe.

There isn’t anything wrong with wanting to try such noble pursuits. It’s only human to aspire to be as grand and as shining as the stars. To dazzle everyone with warm twinkling glow of one’s talent.

But I find it ironic that most of us talk about wanting to do heroic things, wanting to create an everlasting impact, wanting to do “kuch badaa…bahut badaa”(In English, something fucking darn big) but we shy away from doing the actual work. Especially living the values that lead to such greatness.

Isn’t it ironic that we want our work to inspire millions but sometimes can’t even inspire people who are sitting in the cubicles right next to ours? Or our friends and family.

How on the earth would anyone create a global impact if one can’t even impact people around with one’s work ethic, positive attitude, creativity, exceeding the expectations, and spreading happiness all around. These are few things that create a positive impact.

We need to stop talking about putting a dent in the universe. And need to start thinking deeply if our actions inspire and help people around us firstfamily, friends and colleagues. Greatness begins at home and your office first.

If our actions could inspire only this small group of people then we would have created an impact and set fire to a human chain reaction for a global impact.

And if they don’t, then, we should be very, very pissed off.
