In October, just as the season brings us pumpkin spice lattes, Adobe hosted its annual Adobe MAX 2023 conference in Los Angeles. This event was the stage for Adobe to unveil its latest software features, with a pronounced focus on the integral role of artificial intelligence (AI) in its keynote.

Some of these highlights were no secret, such as Generative Fill in Photoshop. What’s unique is that Adobe chose to release these features to users as open betas, rather than waiting a year for an official announcement and release. This approach recognized the ever-evolving nature of AI, ensuring it remained as dynamic as your abandoned sourdough starter buried in the back of the fridge.

Nonetheless, this strategy did dilute some of the traditional “wow” factor from Adobe’s keynote, as many of these announcements had already been in users’ hands for some time. The change raises questions about how it affects the excitement and anticipation that once characterized the MAX conference, which is now in the past.

So what did they introduce?

  1. In a recent update, Firefly’s foundational model has undergone significant enhancements. Now, it possesses the ability to generate images in a specified style, which can be fine-tuned using examples or selected from existing references. This includes the generation of lifelike human figures and the customization of various photographic parameters. It doesn’t stop there — Firefly has also become a more adept problem-solver, aiding users in posing the right questions and providing helpful hints along the way. Furthermore, the quality of its output has seen remarkable improvements.
  2. But that’s not all. A novel addition is the Firefly vector model, which excels at generating objects harmonizing with the style of the desired illustration. It’s a master at crafting textures, and gradients, and adeptly structuring the geometry and layers of these objects.
  3. Additionally, the Firefly Design model has entered the stage. It specializes in producing seamless and easily editable templates, currently tailored for Adobe Express. These templates are adaptable to various settings, whether it’s social media or print. Users can explore a spectrum of options for text, graphics, and overall composition.

By the way, Firefly recently became available via API on the NVIDIA Omniverse platform.

Project Fast Fill

One of the highlights, Project Fast Fill, is set to redefine video editing. It employs Generative Fill, powered by Adobe Firefly, to seamlessly replace textures in videos, all through simple text prompts. This game-changing technology simplifies the often painstaking task of texture editing in video, promising to save video editors a significant amount of time.

Project Draw & Delight

Project Draw & Delight takes creativity to another level by using generative AI to transform initial ideas into polished sketches. It goes beyond mere text-to-image conversion, offering users the ability to combine textual instructions with visual hints. The result is a palette of high-quality illustrations and animations in various styles, colors, poses, and backgrounds.

Project Neo

For designers, Project Neo is a revelation. It allows the creation of 2D content using 3D shapes without the need to delve into complex 3D software. This innovation simplifies the process of designing in two or three-point perspectives and encourages seamless collaboration.

Project Scene Change

Composition is the heart of cinematography, and Project Scene Change makes it easier to merge subjects and scenes from separate videos. This AI-driven technology renders background scenes in 3D, allowing for realistic compositing of subjects with compatible camera motion.

Project Primrose

Project Primrose extends Adobe’s creative prowess into fashion and flexible textiles. It enables the integration of digital content into clothing and surfaces, unlocking limitless style possibilities. Designers can now bring their digital designs to life with ease.

Project Glyph Ease

Custom typography is a time-consuming process for designers. Project Glyph Ease offers a solution by generating stylized and customized letters in vector format. This feature simplifies the font creation process, making it more accessible to designers.

Project Poseable

Creating 3D prototypes and storyboards can be time-consuming. Project Poseable leverages generative AI to expedite the design process, making it effortless to render 3D character scenes.

Project Res Up

Project Res Up tackles the issue of low-resolution videos, offering a solution for upscaling them to higher resolutions. This feature is a boon for enhancing the visual quality of older videos.

Project Dub Dub Dub

In an increasingly global digital landscape, Project Dub Dub Dub’s ability to auto-dub content in over 70 languages is invaluable. This innovation uses generative AI to translate and match the speaker’s voice and tone, making content accessible to a broader audience.

Project Stardust

Project Stardust revolutionizes image editing through object-aware AI. It automates complex image editing tasks, making it accessible to users of all skill levels.

Project See Through

Photographers often struggle with unwanted reflections. Project See Through uses AI to automatically remove reflections from images, providing greater control over the final result.

Conclusion

As a Product Designer, I see these innovative generative AI technologies as game-changers for the creative industry. They have the potential to revolutionize the way we work, unleashing our imaginations and simplifying complex tasks. Adobe MAX 2023 has given us a tantalizing peek into the future of creative technology, and I’m excited to see how these innovations will shape the world of design and creativity in the years to come.
