The UX of Logo Design

Last year, I took up a project of branding and my client asked why I am not on Fiver for logo design. I know logo designing is in flakes in terms of pricing, and people assume when we get can a logo for our brand in $1 then, why some logo designers ask us to spend $99.

Designing a logo is not just making beautiful illustrations or putting out alphabets over there, these are poor tactics that result in companies changing their logos again and again. Logo design is much like the process of UX design for any website and mobile application. A well-executed logo is a result of a lot of thought process that has been put into it.

Stakeholder Interviews

In the initial stage of the project, a logo designer usually asks the client for the project description that states what the client specifically wants. But the logo designer must ask questions like:

What does the company do?
Who are its customers?
What are its mission and vision?
Where is it geographically located? or where it plans to expand?

Mind Mapping

After gathering all the insights, they must brainstorm into how to convert this information into ideas. Just like UX designers, many logo designers use a mind mapping tool which helps in bringing new and fresh ideas for the logo design. Here is an example of BD company, which deals in the supply of wallpapers in India.

Sketching

Just like in UX, it is advised to sketch as many ideas on paper as possible before touching your software. Sometimes it takes days to sketch out all the different ideas. Directly moving to the software results in sticking to your first idea which turns out to be half-cooked design.

Use your tool

After getting an exhaustive list of designs, it is recommended to pick three-five best designs from them and start designing using the software.

After the designs are completed on software, it is best to involve your client for their reviews. This is the time to ascertain whether the client expectations have been fulfilled or not.

Usability Test

Once the logo is finalized, it is advised to test the logo for various situations before handing it over to the clients. Just like the prototype is tested on users to validate the designs, the logo must be tested for

  1. Size: How will the logo look like when required in a smaller size?
  2. Social Media Dimensions: Many companies are now advertising on social media platforms, it is necessary to take into account how will the company name and logo together be represented on different platforms.

3. Black and White: How will the logo represent when it has to be printed in black color? Or, how will the logo represent when it is to be represented on darker backgrounds.

Taking into consideration these factors, the usability of the logo design increases for the company.

Finally, I want to summarize with:
“The function of design is letting design function.” — Micha Commeren, designer
I wonder if Fiver designers take into consideration such efforts for $1.
